CSIR-CSIO develops technology of Electronic Knee in Collaboration with Walnut Medical

Chandigarh,February 02, 2017-CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIR-CSIO), Chandigarh today transferred the technology of ‘Electronic Knee’ to M/s Walnut Medical Pvt. Ltd., Ambala City which builds technology and products for neuro rehabilitation like neuro-prosthesis for stroke/paralysis for patients/virtual rehabilitation devices for cerebral palsy patients and mobility assist devices for patients with motor disability. The technology was developed by Dr. Neelesh Kumar and his team at Biomedical Instrumentation division of CSIR-CSIO, Chandigarh in collaboration with Walnut Medical Pvt. Ltd over a period of 5 years.
Electronic Knee is an intelligent prosthetic device for transfemoral (above knee) amputees which will be manufactured for the first time in India by an Indian company. It will benefit millions of amputees. The device has built in microcontroller and sensors and assists persons involved in activities requiring high level of stance stability. The device developed at CSIR-CSIO transferred to M/s Walnut Medical Pvt Ltd, Ambala for its commercial manufacturing in India and soon will be available in the market at one tenth the cost in comparison of available imported devices. The device is light weight and requires less effort on the part of the physically challenged.
